I’m Sooo Not a hipmom

I found this site, hipmom, and came away feeling, well, inadequate.  The blog’s tagline is “Superwomen do not exist. But style, balance and beauty still do.”

Hmmm.

Isn’t that what a superwoman does? Balances style, beauty, remembering to bring the lunchbox and not screaming at your kids in public? The site is all about recreating your life to be harmonious and calming (do you hear the bluebird chirping on my shoulder?). That’s nice, but completely unrealistic to my life. Plus the site just sells a bunch of makeup and candles to help you achieve that hipmomness.

Here’s my reality. I painted my nails yesterday. It takes all day to dry between layers and working. Max looks at my toes and says, “Why are your toes brown? They’re supposed to be red like your fingers.”

Thanks son. I’ll get on that right away.

I’m fashionable today, but only because it’s Fall Festival. I can’t have the other mommies looking down on my walking clothes. However, they were good enough for the tour of his new school yesterday.

I haven’t gone to yoga in weeks. Not that I have to actually go to do yoga. I can do it in my home. I just don’t.

So don’t talk to me about being a fashionable, trendy hipmom! I don’t want to hear it!!

Am I a Good Mother?

Am I a good mother? Often I feel I’m not. Do other women ask themselves that question only to answer, “Why yes, I am a stellar mother.”

I’m not a bad mother. I mean, I don’t leave my kid in the rain. I feed him from time to time. But sometimes I feel like I’m just too impatient with him.

Wine + Kids= Playdate

I don’t know what I thought a playdate would be. Other moms telling me how great their children are as they push Max on the playground, I guess.

But now that I’ve met moms I actually like and have things in common with, I’ve learned a playdate is what you make it. And they’re as much for us as for the kids.

I recently have become friends with Toni and Joana. Their kids are in Max’s class. We got together and let the kids run wild (complete with a jacuzzi bath) while we had a glass three bottles of wine. We chatted about all things: parenting, business, travel, drinking. It was a blast.

So no more am I afraid of playdates. Just don’t let your kid push mine or we’ll have words.
