I’m Talking to My Skin

I haven’t had many facials in my life. The reason being, if I spend the money, I want to see the results. I want my skin to glow like never before. And in the past, it just hasn’t.

Then I got a LivingSocial deal (they’re like Groupon) for a massage and facial for like $60. My world has forever been changed.

My facialist was amazing. Not only did she have amazing skin, and didn’t look old enough to have a college student, but she gave me advice I’d never gotten. I realize that being in my near-mid-thirties, I need to start paying attention to my skin. I don’t really have a routine. But now I know better what I need. Her advice to me?

“Talk to your skin.”

See what’s going on with your skin on a daily basis. What you eat, how much water you drink, how much sleep you get, your environment, all these factors contribute to whether your skin is happy or not.

I still get a bit of acne. She assured me that it’s normal. She said one day I might need to focus on the acne with my skincare regime, but the next, maybe tackle it being dry.

She spotted early signs of wrinkles. Sometimes honesty’s not the best policy. Ug. And she said I needed to watch the sun, as my freckles are showing uneven coloring on my skin (she was Asian, so I feel like she thought freckles were unattractive, but I like ‘em). She told me to apply sunscreen if I’m going out at all.

And toner. I didn’t even know what it was for, but she sold me on adding it to my routine. As our skin ages, it doesn’t hold water as well. A good toner will help retain that moisture. She recommended one with Vitamin C.

And the best part? She didn’t try to sell me her products. I told her what I use and she said go with it.

So from now on I will:

  • Wash, tone, moisturize
  • Exfoliate and mask once a week (she said these 2 go well together)
  • Use a clay mask if acne is a problem
  • Use Vitamin C products to help my skin’s health
  • Wash my face more slowly. She exfoliated for I swear 10 minutes. I could tell after.
  • Get a facial every 2 months

Aging sucks. But I want to start these routines before it’s too late, ya know?

What about you? What’s your skin care regime?

Seussical the Musical: Unwanted Pregnancy & Child Abandonment

So we went to see Seussical the Musical the other day. Overall, it was good. It was loosely based on Horton Hears a Who, and the kids in it were fantastically talented.

But then we get to the part where Mayzie, the flamboyant red bird, is sitting on an egg. Horton asks how she got in this predicament, and she proceeds to sing about a boy bird who wooed her and then left her. Alone. With this egg.

And now she’s bored and cranky, taking care of the egg, so won’t Horton please watch her egg while she takes the afternoon off? He does, and she flies away for the winter.

Am I the only one who sees this as inappropriate content for children’s play?? My friend who went with us did too. But when I searched online there is no one talking about this.

I’m not a prude. In fact, I’m pretty damn liberal. But this really bothered me. What purpose did this bird having a fling and being left with the egg, then abandoning it, have in the bigger scope of this fun, upbeat play??

What do you think? Have you seen it?
