Artist or Athlete?
Max is 4, and not currently exhibiting much interest in athletics. We put him in basketball last year. He was excited all of 4 sessions before the whining started. Now that I won’t let him wear a life jacket at the pool, he drags his feet about swimming. The hub tries to play soccer with him, but doesn’t get much enthusiasm.

A Little History
I, like so many kids, detested P.E. I was the kid who got hit in the face with the kickball, and got her glasses broken. I was the last one picked, and dodgeball was enough to make me break out in hives. I preferred (and still do) reading and drawing.
My husband (who I just found out was exactly like Max at his age) was athletic. He played soccer in high school, and always had the average male teenager’s ability to pick up a sport and put it down at leisure. He now has a strict regimen of running, swimming, and working out (and yes, I’m proud to say, he’s training for a triathlon). Worst yet, he even seems to enjoy this torture!
So where does Max fall? We suspect he’ll lean toward my interests, and that’s fine. I just want to expose him to as many sports as possible so he doesn’t end up the last one picked and the dodgeball target.

Don’t worry too much about it at this age! My son was the same way at 4, at 5, at 6, and finally at 7 showed some interest in learning to ice skate. Once he took a few lessons we put him on the house league at our local rink. 5 seasons later, he still loves hockey and is considering trying out for track at school. He is also a very avid reader and straight A student.
Same goes with our youngest. Showed no interest in any sports until 6. Now she is major fish – swimming on the swim team year round.
Our middle child will try any sport, loves science and hates to read. Go figure.
The best part is they are all different, have different talents and personalities – and that is what matters most.
