What a Family New Year Looks Like

We gave up on going out for New Year’s when we had Max. I think we’ve been out alone once in 7 years. But as he’s gotten older, it’s gotten more fun. This year, we played charades and had a dance party, as well as played wii Mario Kart. It was a blast. At midnight, we blew our horns out the window as others in San Francisco screamed and cheered.

I was glad I wasn’t at a bar. I was glad I wouldn’t have to fight the crowds to come home. I was glad I was already in my pjs. I was glad to be ringing in the new year with the boys I love best.

Happy New Year, family style, y’all.

Santosha: A Daily Life Lesson

A couple of months ago, I got a tattoo. Yes, I’ve been quiet about it. It just feels dorky to post on Facebook and my blog. But I love it.

IMAG0007

In case your Sanskrit is rusty, it says “Santosha.” In my translation, it means “being happy in the moment.”

I have trouble with this. I’m always thinking about how awesome things will be on our next vacation, or when we move into our next house, or get our next car. You see a pattern of consumption?

I have an amazing life today, and it’s one I want to revel in more. So I got a tattoo to remind me that nothing is more important than right now.

And yes, it was my first tattoo. I waited 33 years before deciding I must have a permanent mark on my body. I’m weird, I know. But I got it with my best friend who also waited 33 years (except she got her first one a few months before I did. The Bee couldn’t wait.)

Santosha, ya’ll.

The Fun’s About to Begin

I’m on the edge of several weeks of busy. Fun busy, but busy just the same.

Max and I are headed to Wisconsin to visit my oldest and dearest BFF. We’ll eat curds (well, I will), drink wine (well, adults will) and ride jet skis. Good times will be had.

Then, home for a few days, before BlogHer, which I’m really excited about attending.

Day to rest, then mom comes for 10 days. Throw in Max’s birthday and party to the mix, and I’ll need a vacation after my vacation!
