My Funny Valentine

I mentioned on Twitter and Facebook that I was celebrating my 10th anniversary this weekend, and Morningside Mom (Caroline) asked my story and suggested I blog it. Who has to be asked twice to tell their romantic story??

My husband and I met in French class in college in 1997. Alas, cute and cocky as he was, he had a girlfriend. After two years of bumping into each other and sadly moving on, he called me out of the blue a few days before Valentine’s. My roommate and I happened to be having a Love Sucks party. I invited him. He came. We stayed up all night talking. The rest is, as they say, history.

We’ve traveled through Europe. We speak French to each other (more to keep Max from knowing what we’re talking about). We’ve endured the usual hardships a couple goes through in their first 10 years together (if that involves buying a Marble Slab Creamery and shutting it down 6 months later, as well has having him move to Joplin, MO to work for what seems like it will be forever. Everyone goes through that, right??)

This weekend he came down for our anniversary. We had the babysitter all lined up for an overnight. I was pumped. Like most parents, we don’t go out much, and overnights are few and far between.

We ended up at Universal Studios. We NEVER go to theme parks together. It just never works out for some reason. It was a blast. I loved listening to him laugh hysterically on the roller coaster. He was sweet enough to defer to me on every decision (actually he wanted me to stop asking questions like “what do you want to eat?” and threatened bodily harm.). We watched the Mardi Gras parade, and ended the night drinking Hurricanes from Pat O’Briens, a place and a drink we hold dear to our hearts, since we like to escape to New Orleans from time to time.

It was a perfect weekend. We seem to appreciate one another more now that we’re 2000 miles apart. I loved seeing him with Max (who teared up when we picked him up). I just love him. That’s all. Happy Anniversary, honey.

I’m glad you enjoyed your anniversary. Which Marble Slab Creamery did you own?

We owned the one in Sanford. It’s gone now.
