We’re Moving to China! or: How Much Stuff Do You Really Need?

I have to confess. I’ve been keeping a secret from you.

The Paytons are moving to China.

Yes, China. And yes, we are crazy. We’re doing it because:

a) we’ve wanted to live abroad for a long time and decided to finally take the leap.

b) China’s a great place to do business these days. They’re all about Americans bringing their money there.

c) It’s very cheap. We could pay off our bills and save.

The best part? We don’t have a plan yet. We’ve both applied for jobs to get our foot in the door (although I will still run Egg Marketing from China), but so far nothing’s panned out. So we are selling all our worldly belongings and don’t have a clue how we’re getting there. But it’ll work out.

Speaking of selling everything, we had a mega garage sale this weekend. It’s a little sickening how much stuff we had. No wonder we keep needing a bigger house! Getting rid of it has been so cleansing, and once I got over the initial shock of getting rid of all my beautiful IKEA furniture, it felt good.

I’m looking at this adventure as being a social experiment for us to really see how much we actually need. It’s really not that much. So we will ship a few boxes of necessities halfway around the world and see how we fare.

Look for great posts here once we get there. I will totally rely on my blog to let out my frustrations in not speaking the language, share my funny stories, and give you a glimpse of my new life in the Middle Kingdom.

PS We haven’t told Max yet, so SHHH!

PPS I heard they banned YouTube in China so I’ll have to find a work around for posting videos!

PPPS If my posts seem very pro China and not my usual snarky self, it’s because Big Brother Mao will be watching, and I don’t want to get thrown in jail because I criticize the country. But don’t worry. I’ll amass all the scary tales and release a book or something when we leave!
